Once upon an inept government ..
I was at work getting ready to go back home and celebrate the upcoming thankgiving weekend when I first got a phone call from back home in New Delhi about the Mumbai terrorist attacks.
Our weekend was overwhelmed by the discussions about these acts of violence. I was overcome by a feeling of anger and obvious helplessness. I wanted to post something right away. Probably one of the millions of posts condemning the attacks and symphathysing with Mumbaikars. Although the attacks at this scale have never been seen in India the story of the attacks are nothing new. The 2001 attacks on the Indian parliament in New Delhi, the attacks on the Akshardham temple and the strings of bombings in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi and Guwahati are just a few examples of senseless acts of violence where innocent people, women anad children are victimized.
The sad story of all this is the complete incompetence that the Indian government has shown. Their completely reactive attitude and lack of purpose has been criticized by one and all. This is another security and intelligence failure on a scale like no other. The intelligence indications by both local and international security agencies were ignored and the results were devastating. Almost two hundred lives of all creeds, colors and nationalities were lost. I sincerely hope that this serves as a wake up call and the government provides proactive system where we can stop future occurrences at this scale.
Indian news channels are full of politicians pointing fingers at each other not realizing that solidarity is the need of the hour. Get over it, one billion people in India and five billion more around the world need a Government that does more than talk.
My heart goes out to the families of those who died, both civilians and the brave law enforcement officials and army personnel. I hope your deaths don’t go in vain.
